Martha Graham Dance Company Launches
Clytemnestra ReMash Challenge
Online Video Competition to Recreate moments from Martha Graham’s Greatest Masterpiece, “Clytemnestra”
Winning Video will Premiere during Martha Graham Dance Company’s
New York Season in May 2009
New York, NY – January 26th, 2009 — The Martha Graham Dance Company, the oldest and most celebrated dance company in America, today announces the launch of its online video competition, The Clytemnestra ReMash Challenge. The Graham Company is calling for short videos that reinvent and transform moments from Martha Graham’s greatest masterpiece, Clytemnestra.
Martha Graham’s Clytemnestra, the only full-length ballet in Graham’s repertoire, is a dance-drama built on Greek mythology and the great Greek tragedies. When Clytemnestra premiered in 1958, it was an instant hit. The 2008 revival has been acclaimed by critics and audiences world wide.
Participants can enter the Clytemnestra ReMash Challenge by downloading a video of one of the characters in Clytemnestra’s world: Helen of Troy, Electra, Clytemnestra, Cassandra, or the Messenger of Death. The contest challenges competitors to rework and remix the solo according to their own creative ideas and to submit a four-minute video that relates the classic character to someone making headlines today.
A “ReMash” is a multi-media remix.” says Janet Eilber, Artistic Director of the Martha Graham Center and creator of the ReMash Challenge. “The Graham Company is leading the world of modern dance in experimenting with innovative ways to connect with new audiences, and this project is a first for the field. Releasing this historic masterpiece to be reinterpreted using the latest in media technology upholds Martha Graham’s legacy of innovation. It has the potential to create remarkable hybrid art that connects the ancient and recent past to what is happening today.”
“This is the first time the Graham Company is broadening its works and inviting a new media interpretation of this theater classic,” said Tadej Brdnik, Martha Graham Dance Company’s Principal Dancer and ReMash Challenge Leader. “Through the Clytemnestra ReMash Challenge, we are reaching out to artists globally and showcasing the rich legacy of Graham and its influence on American dance.”
A panel of experts from the dance and media worlds will select winners based on the most innovative transformation of the video clips. Judges will look for an understanding of the classic character depicted in the Graham solo and how that character connects to a contemporary personality.
The winner will receive $500 and the winning video will be premiered on stage during Martha Graham Dance Company’s New York Season performances in May 2009. The second and third place winners will receive $250 prize each. All three winners will be promoted widely — particularly in connection with performances of Clytemnestra.
Details of The Clytemnestra ReMash Challenge including instructions and rules of the competition can be found at www.marthagrahamprojects.com. The competition opens on February 1, 2009 and the submissions deadline is March 31, 2009. Winners will be announced on May 11, 2009.
