The Problem Nobody Names

Clytemnestraproject works on garage doors in Huntington Beach from an office on Warner Ave, in the 92648 ZIP. We do the ordinary range of repairs, but the work we are known for is narrow and slightly odd: getting sand out of doors, and specifying hardware that survives the sand that comes back.

Coastal garage door advice is almost entirely about salt. Salt is real. It is also slow, chemical, and it mostly punishes cable, fasteners and anything with a broken coating. Sand is a different animal. It is mechanical, it is fast, and it goes after exactly the parts that move.

Why This City Is Different

Plenty of towns claim to be coastal. Huntington Beach is a genuine beach town, with miles of open dry sand and a reliable afternoon onshore wind to move it. The dunes and the beach are the source, the wind is the delivery, and a garage opening is a very good place for airborne grit to settle out.

We have opened up doors three blocks from Pacific Coast Highway and found a bottom track holding a visible drift of grey sand. Not dust. Sand, the same stuff people shake out of a towel.

What Grit Does to a Door

Beach sand is mostly quartz, which is roughly 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Garage door track is mild steel, around 4. Every time a roller crosses a grain, the grain wins. The track develops a bright polished stripe, the roller wheel picks up flats, and if any of that grit reaches an open ball race the wheel stops rolling and starts sliding.

The compounding step is lubricant. Somebody hears a grind, sprays the track, and the sand that was loose and vacuumable is now glued in place as a paste. We spend a fair amount of our week undoing that particular good intention.

How We Prefer to Work

Half of this is homeowner maintenance, and we say so. A shop vacuum, a rag and ten minutes twice a year removes most of the damage before it happens. We would rather explain that on the phone than sell a visit for it.

Where we earn our money is the rest: rollers already gone, bearings already squealing, a bottom seal that has been packed solid so long the door has never actually closed on it, and specifying replacements that will not be back in this state in eighteen months.
